Personal reflection over Exchange 2010 storage

October 3rd, 2009 Magnus Björk 1 comment

Sometimes one just has to share a thought, for me this is a moment just like that.

I have just finished a pre-study for a large customer (~20000 users) and found that the cost savings with a SATA-based DAS solution are huge compared to SAN. This is of course no surprise but I found the performance almost chocking! A single SATA-drive handles almost a 1000 users and it works really well.

The biggest challenge is without doubt to convince customers not to use expensive SAN-based storage. I have to admit that when I was presented with some of the facts related to Exchange 2010 storage (SATA-disks, no RAID, backup less and so on) I was a bit skeptic myself. But seen how it performs and how much you could save really made me excited.

To me this is huge! Not that a product performs in a way it’s supposed to but to be able to save real money for customers with a well-designed product.

Thanks for reading and have great weekend!
